“The Self-Love Cabaret: l’amour se conjugue à la première personne” is an annual performance night curated by Kama La Mackerel, and that typically takes place on February 14th. The Self-Love Cabaret is an anti-valentine’s day performance manifesto.

As yet another February 14th approaches, as images of coupledom dominate our day-to-day living and our imaginary, as we rush online to try to find ourselves a new date with whom to shrug off the mid-February cold, as we get bombarded with images of couples-couples-couples and we feel the pressure for chocolates, candle-light dinners, and red-red-red roses and red-red-red wine to celebrate the Other, “The Self-Love Cabaret: l’amour se conjugue à la première personne,” is a night to celebrate self-love with queer and feminist artists!

The Self-Love Cabaret seeks to showcase primarily upcoming feminist and queer artists, particularly those from traditionally marginalized communities of the Montréal art and performance scenes. Through this performance night, Kama La Mackerel attempts to create visibility for lesser known artists, particularly artists of color and indigenous artists, who self-identify as queer, trans*.

Simultaneously, the Self-Love Cabaret also acts as a platform to challenge heteronormative and homonormative ideals that celebrate coupledom and bestow privileges on couples that fit within a normative and nationalist frameworks, as well as challenge the consumerist and capitalist aspects of Valentine’s day where purchasing power is tied to the possession of another human being.

The Self-Love Cabaret typically features spoken word, music, film, burlesque, theatre, comedy, dance and multi-media and multi-disciplinary art.
